Located in a surburb of north-east Leeds, Chapeltown is approximately one mile outside of Leeds City Centre with regular public transport links. In May 2003, Leeds City Council designated parts of Chapeltown as a conservation area in recognition of its special architectural and historic interest and to protect its character from harmful change. This enlarges the St Mary's Road (Chapeltown) conservation area which was first designated in December 1974. Chapeltown itself is well known for hosting leeds carnival every year during the August bank holiday, Europe's longest standing carribean carnival.
